Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 6/6. Thanks to all of you who’ve shown interest & been in touch, especially around the time of the Itaewon Disaster. Some of you have told me you’ve become interested in Korea as a result & that’s great. For now, 안녕 , annyeong.
This blog
Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 5/6. Twitter has lasted long enough to be a useful way to record & share my experiences before collecting them here. I’ve a few weeks of sabbatical left & hope to spend time here reflecting on what I’ve learnt.
Thank you
Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 4/6. Huge gratitude for all who’ve made this possible. Most of all Carys. But also Fr Aeduk in Korea, the great team back in Kettering & financial help from the Diocese of Peterborough & Ecclesiastical Insurance.
Memories & friendships
Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 3/6. I leave full of memories & with new & deepened friendships. One unexpected new friendship was with Fr David from Myanmar & that has awakened a new interest in me.
Korea
Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 2/6. My interest in Korea has just been whetted & I expect to keep learning about its history & culture. And I hope to build on my knowledge of Hanguel – occasionally invaluable on the trip – & actually learn the language.
Flying home
Sat 12 Nov 2022, Day 61/61, 1/6. So my journey is reaching its end & I’m at Incheon Airport waiting for the flight home. I’m so glad I decided to do this: it’s been an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience.
Train to Busan
Fri 11 Nov 2022, Day 60/61. I’m now fortunately on the train travelling away from Busan, not towards it. There are no zombies on this train.
UK Embassy
11 Nov 2022, Day 60/61, 7/7. Very good to meet the UK ambassador, @ColinCrooks1 again & other Embassy staff including Commodore Andy Lamb. Thanks to them & Cemetery staff for organising a taxi for me. Such a friendly & helpful team.
Their sacrifice for South Korea
Fri 11 Nov 2022, Day 60/61, 6/7. I found the whole morning very moving. Without the sacrifices of these soldiers South Korea would simply not exist now. Here’s the UN flag being raised alongside national flags, 1 hour before the ceremony.
James Grundy
Fri 11 Nov 2022, Day 60/61, 5/7. Today saw the interment of the remains of James Grundy, who survived the war & died just a few months ago. He returned every year to the Cemetery. His wish was to end up here himself.
