Gangnam

Tue 25 Oct 2022, Day 43/61, 1/3. One Seoul district which people do know about is Gangnam-gu, 강남구, because of Psy’s 2012 video, the first to hit 1 billion YouTube views. Gangnam is a wealthy area & a business centre with upmarket shopping.

Dongdaemun

Mon 24 Oct 2022, Day 42/61, 3/3. Earlier I visited another district, Dongdaemun-gu, 동대문구, to see a section of the old city wall & Zaha Hadid’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

Jongno Tower

Mon 24 Oct 2022, Day 42/61, 2/3. Opposite the bell pavilion is the Jongno Tower, which used to have a bar on the top floor overlooking the district. Today we discovered the bar has been replaced by offices.

Jongno-gu

Mon 24 Oct 2022, Day 42/61, 1/3. Seoul is divided into 25 districts or ‘gu’, 구. Most of our time has been in Jongno-gu, 종로구, taking its name from a bell housed in this pavilion & originally struck daily to announce the opening & closing of the city gates.

The news

Mon 24 Oct 2022, Day 42/61. It’s been hard to focus exclusively on Korea with the political turmoil back home. Sadly I think the spotlight may shift to the Korean peninsula in the next fortnight or so.

The Battle of Osan

Sun 23 Oct 2022, Day 41/61. The Battle of Osan on 5 July 1950 was the first military confrontation between US & North Korean troops in the Korean War. Today we visited the First Battle Memorial.

Preaching in Osan

Sun 23 Oct 2022, Day 41/61. Back down to Osan, where my sermon was in ‘Q & A’ format.

The Jogyesa

Sat 22 Oct 2022, Day 40/61. The chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the Jogyesa, is close to our hotel: we hear chanting in the morning. Today I paid a visit. The Jogye Order represents Seon Buddhism (better known in the West as Zen).

Daejeon

Fri 21 Oct 2022, Day 39/61. On Friday I took the train to meet with Moses, Bishop of Daejeon, & some of his clergy. Daejeon is the country’s fifth largest metropolis. I visited two projects run by the Anglican Church, caring for teenagers in need of support.
