Juggling KakaoMap & Google Maps

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61, 2/2. There are possibly easier ways around this. But I’ve used Google Maps to find the places I’m looking for; copied the Hanguel address – usually also provided by Google Maps – & pasted it into KakaoMap before setting out on my journey.

Finding the way on foot

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61, 1/2. Getting around on foot has been less simple. Google Maps is good for showing your location & for finding places using roman characters. But it can’t plot routes in Korea. KakaoMap can plot routes but often needs Hanguel addresses.

Wifi router

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61, 2/2. What has been completely indispensible is being able to carry a portable wifi router around with us whereever we go. I think it’s only cost just over £1 a day.

T-Money card

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61, 1/2. Two things have made our time in Seoul much easier. The first is a T-money card. You use it to pay for the metro & for buses; you can also use it in taxis & shops. You have to use Korean won to top it up though.

The Seoul Metro

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61. The Seoul Metro is cheap & clean, with special seats reserved for the elderly & others. To find the right platform, you need to know the station at the end of the line. But on the platform itself you need the name of the next station.

The Kachin people

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61. The Kachin are a confederation of ethnic groups living in northern Myanmar, India & China. In Myanmar they are largely Christian; in China, animists. Some of David’s churches are in areas controlled by the Kachin Independence Army.

Myanmar Restaurant

Sat 5 Nov 2022, Day 54/61. Travelled with Fr David to Bupyeong, 부평구 – an area of Incheon but on the Seoul Metro – to a recently opened Myanmar restaurant. The restaurant is run by Kachins, so David got to use the language of his own people.

Joseph Joo

Fri 4 Nov 2022, Day 53/61, 1/2. Pancake for dinner with Joseph Joo, Anglican priest in Mullae-dong, 문래동, a neighbourhood just south of the River. I met Joseph 3 years ago when he was Dean of Seoul Cathedral.

Laundry day

Fri 4 Nov 2022, Day 53/61. It’s rather a long time since I’ve used a student laundrette. Of course the washing machine is Korean.
